Costco combines membership economics, purchasing scale, price leadership, and rapid digital growth, though its premium valuation leaves little room for disappointment.

The overall score is a weighted research judgment covering business quality, fundamental strength, growth catalysts, valuation, technical condition, and downside risk. A high score does not eliminate risk, and a low score does not guarantee poor performance.
The rating combines business quality, fundamentals, growth, valuation, technicals, and risk. It is a research opinion, not a price target or prediction.
Costco operates membership warehouses and eCommerce sites that sell a limited assortment of groceries, general merchandise, fuel, pharmacy products, optical services, travel, and other goods. At the end of the fiscal third quarter, Costco operated 931 warehouses, including 639 in the United States and Puerto Rico, 115 in Canada, 43 in Mexico, 37 in Japan, and locations across other international markets.
The model is intentionally different from a traditional retailer:
Costco's moat comes from scale, member loyalty, supplier relationships, high unit volumes, efficient operations, and a culture that protects long-term customer value.
Third-quarter net sales increased 11.6% to $69.15 billion. Membership fees rose 10.7% to $1.37 billion, bringing total quarterly revenue to $70.53 billion. Operating income increased 11.3% to $2.82 billion, and net income rose to $2.19 billion, or $4.93 per diluted share.
Comparable sales were strong across regions. Adjusted for gasoline prices and foreign exchange, comparable sales increased 6.8% in the United States, 6.2% in Canada, 5.9% in other international markets, and 6.6% companywide. Digitally enabled comparable sales increased 20.8%, showing that Costco can extend its warehouse relationship online.
For the first 36 weeks of the fiscal year, net sales reached $203.37 billion, membership fees reached $4.06 billion, operating income reached $7.88 billion, and net income reached $6.23 billion. The merchandise business runs on thin margins, so membership growth, renewal, traffic, and expense control remain essential.
The balance sheet is conservatively financed. Costco has enough liquidity to fund new warehouses, distribution infrastructure, digital investments, dividends, and opportunistic repurchases without relying heavily on debt.
Near $948 per share, Costco's market value was approximately $421 billion and the stock traded near 47.7 times trailing earnings. That is a major premium to most large retailers and the broader market.
The premium reflects recurring membership economics, consistent execution, defensive demand, and a long runway for warehouse expansion. It also creates meaningful downside risk if comparable sales, membership growth, margins, or expansion slow. My valuation view is excellent company, demanding stock price.
Costco's current trend, EMA ribbon, 200-day EMA, RSI, MACD, volume, ATR, support, and resistance are recalculated in the live technical snapshot above. Use that panel for current values because they change after every completed trading day.
For a high-multiple stock, a decisive close below major moving averages can matter because valuation compression can amplify ordinary earnings disappointments. Strong setups require trend confirmation and volume rather than an intraday move through a level.
The live panel automatically estimates fair value gaps, order blocks, breaks of structure, changes of character, and nearby liquidity zones from completed daily candles. These areas are references, not guaranteed reversal points. Confirm them with price action, volume, and position sizing.
The most important checkpoints are comparable sales, traffic, renewal rates, membership-fee growth, new warehouses, digital growth, inventory, and merchandise margin.
Final view: Costco earns a moderately bullish 77 because membership income, scale, loyalty, digital growth, cash flow, and balance-sheet strength make it one of the highest-quality retailers. The score is capped by a valuation near 48 times earnings and the sensitivity of thin retail margins to even a modest slowdown.

Thursday's report may be the last to get much lift from Costco's 2024 fee hike, and membership fees make up about half its operating income.
